Coronavirus Updates: Using Blockchain Technology to Fight the Pandemic

British retail sales fell in March at the steepest pace on record, as efforts to contain the new coronavirus shuttered most of the U.K.’s stores.

The figures suggest the U.K. economy, which is heavily dependent on consumer spending, contracted sharply in the second quarter as a nationwide lockdown kicked in.

Retail sales fell 5.1% on the month in March, with only food and online stores registering any gains, as households stocked up in preparation for weeks at home. Supermarket sales grew more than 10% on the month; sales of alcohol were up more than 30% compared with February.
